Implementation Strategies

You can implement signage changes in two ways: by retrofitting specific building areas or sign types in conjunction with architectural upgrades, or through a phased approach.

The renovation of specific building areas, such as the main lobby or security, marks a natural time to retrofit the signs in that part of the building. You can also retrofit specific sign types, such as building directories, signage in the building’s other public circulation spaces, and code-required signs.

In any retrofit projects, you should change all the signs in a given area or group, or visitors to your building may become confused. For example, retrofitting only some of the building’s corridor directional signs will confuse visitors when they encounter the older signs.

Another approach is phased signage implementation, identifying immediate needs or to take advantage of funding opportunities. Potential phasing scenarios might include beginning with Quick Fix solutions, temporary or first priority signage needs, followed by exterior, main lobby and finally upper floor signs.

Flowchart 2: Phased Implementation
