First Impressions - First Steps

After a comprehensive survey of 24 GSA facilities around the nation, a team of architects, designers, and graphic specialists from Gensler - an internationally recognized architectural firm - identified the factors that most influence visitors’ first impressions of the buildings, including: the approach and immediate exteriors; entrances; building lobbies; elevator lobbies and corridors; elevators; stairs and escalators; agency entrances; and public concession areas.

Well-designed signage systems play a vital role in the safety and advancement of society. Clear, consistent signs will welcome visitors to your building, reduce their anxiety as they rush through a hospital, and finally help them find the office they’re visiting, or other services within your building.

These guidelines will help you understand how to unify the signs in your building. They include the goals of a well-planned signage program, suggested standards for sign designs, recommended sign lists, and ideas about how to get started implementing new sign changes in your building.
